Being a Master Gardener means sharing your knowledge with others
Each year, Master Gardeners donate a minimum of 25 hours of their time to community-oriented projects. In addition, in the first year we work 25 hours at the local extension office. The following are examples of Central Fulton Master Gardener projects, which support communities within the I-285 perimeter.
The Georgia Gold Medal Garden at Centennial Olympic Park
This initial project of the Central Fulton Master Gardeners was created in November 2003. Central Fulton Master Gardeners worked with Mark Banta, General Manager of Centennial Park, to design a large garden of plants that have been designated “Georgia Gold Medal Winners”. These plants (a selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals) have proven high performance records in Georgia’s climate. The Garden is located at the northern end of Centennial Olympic Park, next to the playground and just across the street from the Georgia Aquarium. Most of the winning plants are on display, and many are labeled with their common and Latin names.
Originally working with Trees of Atlanta and Park Pride, this garden is now solely maintained by Central Fulton Master Gardeners. We recognize the importance of urban landscape beautification and share a vision of a greener Atlanta. The Gold Medal Garden is a quiet, hidden gem tucked away at Centennial Olympic Park. Atlanta Habitat for Humanity
Central Fulton Master Gardeners partner with Habitat for Humanity. Each Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home has landscaping installed as part of the house construction project. Our Master Gardeners oversee the installation of this landscape. Our responsibilities include a site analysis, selection of plants prior to the day of installation. On the workday itself, we educate and direct volunteers in the plantings. We also consult with the homeowner on the necessary landscape maintenance.

Hillside School – Atlanta
Founded in 1888, this is one of Atlanta’s oldest charities. It provides treatment for adolescents with severe emotional and psychological challenges. The Central Fulton Master Gardeners developed a large garden and initiated a “garden club”, teaching the children planting methods, propagation, vermiculture and harvesting. In 2010, over 80 pounds of food were donated to the Open Door Community from this garden. In November 2011, we were honored with a plaque from Hillside commending us on this worthwhile project.
Central Fulton Master Gardener participation at local festivals
